Of Interest Hat
Cha-am
Petchaburi's main tourist destination is 40 km south
from the main town. As the first major beach resort
heading south from Bangkok, Cha-am is a regular
spot for holidaying Thais but is now also becoming
more popular with foreigners as well.
The
beach itself is around 3km long and is pure white
sand. The beach front road is scattered with hotels
and guesthouse all offering clean rooms for around
300-800 Baht.
Notably
smaller than Hua-Hin, just down the road in Prachuab
province, Cha-am is slowly being built up as a fully
fledged international resort, with more and more
luxury hotels and resort complexes.
Kaeng
Krachan National Park
Kaeng Krachan is Thailand's biggest national park
and certainly one of the most beautiful. It has
some great spots for camping and also some bungalow
accommodation is available.
In
the park area there are lakes, camp grounds and
numerous wildlife displays giving information on
the species found inside.
On
a clear day you get a superb view of the mountain
range that seperates Thailand from Myanmar. A good
two or three days will give a good time frame to
enjoy the beauty of Kaeng Krachan.
Tham
Khao Yoi
This cave is located on Khao Yoi Hill. Buddha images
of various attitudes are housed inside. Khao Yoi
Cave was the place where King Mongkut practiced
meditation while he was in the monkhood.
Khao
Wang
King Mongkut was very fond of Khao Wang so he commanded
a palace built on top of it in 1860 to be used for
vacationing. He named it Phra Nakhon Khiri but Petchaburi
inhabitants call it "Khao Wang".
Nowadays
Khao Wang is Phra Nakhon Khiri National Museum,
open to the public from 09.00-16.00 hours every
day except Monday and Tuesday. The entrance fee
is 10Baht. To get up to the top you can either walk
or take the recently built cable car.
Khao
Bandai
It This is a rather small hill, only 120 metres
high. An ancient monastery built in the Ayutthaya
period, Wat Khao Bandai, sits at the top. There
are several caves on this hill such as Tham Prathun,
Tham Phra Chao Sua and Tham Phra Puttha Saiyat.
Tham
Khao Luang
The cave is located on Khao Luang Hill which is
only 92 metres high.Regarded as the most important
cave in Petchaburi because it houses a dressing
Buddha image cast by the royal command of King Chulalongkon
as a dedication to King Nang Klao and King Mongkut.
To
the right of Khao Luang, at the foot of the hill,
there is a large monastery called Wat Tham Klaep
with a very large multipurpose hall. The wooden
door panels in the Ubosot are beautifully carved.
Hat
Chao Samran
This beach used to be a famous seaside resort in
the old days. Legend says that King Naresuan the
Great and King Eka Thotsarot used to make royal
visits here.
They
enjoyed the beauty of this beach so very much that
they spent many nights there causing the villagers
to call it the "Beach of Royal Leisure"
Laem
Luang Beach
4km from Hat Chao Samran is Laem Luang Beach,
a white sandy beach 2km long.
Hat
Puktian
7km further is Hat Puktian which is the latest popular
beach in Petchaburi.
