Of Interest Ban
Pong
Ratchaburi's second largest district is famous as
the stopping point for POW's who were brought to
the camps in neighbouring Kanchanaburi. After arriving
at the train station, all prisoners were marched
the 60km to work on the famous River Kwai Bridge
and The Death Railway.
Damnoen
Saduak Floating Market
Known as "Khlong Lat Phli" by the locals,
this is arguabley Ratchaburi's most famous attraction.
Located approximately two kilometers from the site
of Amphoe Damnoen Saduak Office.
Boats
can be hired from Potchawan Landing or from Seri
Khemi Kaset Landing to view the floating stalls
between 6.00am to 11.00am.
Tham
Chomphon Arboretum
This cave was originally called Tham Mutchalin.
Located in a mountain, 191 metres high,just outside
the main town. In 1895 King Chulachomklao and Queen
Si Pathcharin made a royal visit and they liked
the beauty of this cave very much thus giving a
new name to it, 'Tham Chomphon'.
There
are beautiful stalactites and stalagmites in the
cave which also houses a medium sized Reclining
Buddha. In front of the cave lies an arboretum having
various species of plants and trees. It is a suitable
place for relaxing.
Chaloem
Phra Chon Phansa Park
This park sits in the foothills of Chomphon Mountain
and occupies an area of more than 100 rai. It is
utilized as a place for relaxation and as an overnight
stop for tourists.
Khao
Wang
King Rama V commanded a palace built on this hill
but he made only one visit, in 1877. King Rama VII
commanded to give the palace as Thorani Song land
(land belonging to a monastery).
Those
who had merit making skills contributed to the repair
and modification of buildings for the Main Shrine
Hall and monk's living quarters. Later on it was
promoted to be a monastery called 'Wat Khao Wang'.
Khao
Chong Phran
This hill has a beatiful cave housing more than
one hundred Buddha images. The most important amongst
them is the large reclining Buddha which is more
than nine metres long and one metre high.
There
is also the cave of 2 million bats...!
Wat
Phra Si Ratana Mahathat
This is an ancient monastery which has a prang constructed
during the prosperous old Khmer era when they ruled
over the Suwannaphum Kindom. The prang has a characteristic
of the replica of Phre That of Angkor Wat.
Murals
of Wat Khongkharam
This is a Mon monastery over 200 years old and originally
called 'Wat Klang'.King Mongkut gave it a new name,'Wat
Khongkharam'.The beauty of the main shrine hall
is worth studying.
Phra
Phutthachai Tham Rusi Khao Ngu
This is a stone cut Buddha image in the attitude
of giving the first preaching sermon and is the
oldest among the four built in the Dvaravati period.
Khao
Kaen Chan
The road winding up to the peak leads to a vihara
housing Phra Phuttha Nirarokhantarai Chaiwat Chaturathit,
a well respected Buddha image.
Tham
Khao Bin
This cave is in the Khao Bin Range having an approximate
height of 200 metres. There are stalactites and
stalagmites looking like eagles spreading their
wings, giving the name of Tham Khao Bin.
Pong
Yup
This piece of land has sunk down causing a
high cliff outbreak with earthen pillars similar
to those found at Phae Muang Phi in Phrae province.
Hot
Stream
This hot stream is situated in Suan Phung district.Its
source is in the Tanaosi Mountain Range. The stream
flows all the year round and temperatures range
between 50-68 degrees Celcius.
Kosinarai
Pond
Evidence found from archaeological excavations reveals
that this ancient area used to be an old city. Items
found include five arms of Phra Bodhisatva Lokesuan
made of red sandstone and a pair of Phra Bodhisatva's
feet, now stored in the National Museum.
