Through years of trading with old Chinese junks, Samut Sakhon, formerly called Tha Chin, was an important trade post just 25km from Bangkok.

During the reign of King Phra Maha Chakkraphat (16th Cent.) Tha Chin was used as a centre for recruiting troops for the inevitable spats with the Burmese.
