Of Interest Wat
Phra Si Rattana Mahathat
This monastery known by the locals as "Wat Yai"
(big temple), is the most important monastery in
Phitsanulok being the home of the famous Phra Buddha
Chinnarat.It sits at the foot of Naresuan Bridge
on the city side of the river.
Built
in 1357 the temple has many exquisite buildings
within the compound.
The
main Vihara has beautiful mother-of-pearl designs
on the doors and the Buddha image itself is decorated
impressively with gold plate. Behind the Vihara
is a large prang 36 meters high with a staircase
leading up to the niche containing the Buddha relics.
Wat
Chulamani
The Prang, a corncob-shaped tower at Wat Chulamani
is well-known and studied by students of archaeology
and history. The temple is the oldest historical
site in Phitsanulok.
Of
a highly individual style and pattern, the temple
boasts extremely ornate and elaborate plaster designs
of immense interest and value found nowhere else
in Thailand.
