Of Interest Prasat
Hin Khao Phanom Rung
This is a walled-in enclosure, with both the door
frames and walls carved in beautiful designs of
Lopburi Period style with Khom influence. It is
thought that it was originally built as an idol
temple according to Brahminic belief. Within the
Prasat, or castle, is at throne hall built in the
12th Century A.D.
The Reclining Vishnu Lintel
This lintel had long been disappeared from Prasat
Hin Khao Phanom Rung for uncertain time and reason,
until recently on March 1973, was again found displayed
at The Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A.
The
Fine Arts Department in Bangkok had tried repeatedly
since then to bring it back to Thailand, unfortunately
without success. The achievement came unexpectedly
in November 1988, by the decision of the Institute
to return the lintel to Thailand unconditionally.
Prasat
Hin, Muang Tam
Within the compound are three ponds while the structure
itself was made of old-style bricks. Door frames,
wall surfaces and stone surfaces in the ponds are
carved in beautiful designs. It is believed to have
been constructed in the 11th Century.
Prang
Ku Suan Tang
The three pagodas were erected of brick and
mortar in the Khom style. Their door panels are
carved, depicting episodes from the epic of Ramakian(Ramayana).
The exquisitely carved relief, Narai Bantomsin,
once stolen and sold abroad, has now been returned
and kept at the National Museum in Bangkok.
The
Phra Suphatthara Bophit
This image is enshrined atop Khao Kradong Mount,
about six kilometers from town on the Buri Ram-Prakhon
Chai highway. A winding road leads up to the mount
top. A replica of the Holy Footprint is also placed
here.
