Khon Kaen is the "capital" of Issan, Thailand's N.E region and mostly noted for it's picturesque natural scenery and the main attraction is the National Park area.

The province is home to many important establishments, including the Ubolrat Dam, the Khon Kaen University, and the N.E branch of the Bank of Thailand.
