Nong Bualamphu was established as recently as 1993, making it Thailand's 76th and last province. The name was "Nong Bua Lamphu" means "Town of Plentiful Water".

Formerly a district in Udon Thani Province, the locals now celebrates "independence day" every year on 1st Dec.
