The
Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge The
Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge (Thai Saphan Mittaphap
Thai-Lao) connects the provinces of Nong
Khai in Thailand and Vientiane
in Laos. Opened in April 1994, it is only the 2nd
bridge ever built to cross the Mekong.

Primarily
an Australian project, the total cost of construction
was around $US 30m and opened up a large aid program
for Laos, spearheaded by the Australian Government.
The bridge's length is just over 1km.

The
bridge can handle two lanes of cars, has two footpaths
and also has in place space along the centre lane
for a railway, which will eventually be the only
operating railway in Laos.
