Places
Of Interest
For
all of you non-divers, Koh Tao is generally a place
to soak up a few rays. The beaches around the island
are some if the finest in the south, particularly
Haad Thien (Rocky Bay) and Hat Sairee.
Exploring
the island can be a good day out. Rent a motorbike
for about 150-200Th.Baht and take off into the hills.
Koh Tao is small enough so as you won't get lost
but be warned, the roads are generally CRAP!
Beaches
Koh
Tao is blessed with some of Thailand's most spectacular
beaches and bays. Despite the popularity among divers,
the waters surrounding the island remain crystal
clear and ideal for swimming and snorkelling.
-
Sairee
Sairee Beach is the best known of Koh Tao's
beaches and is home to several beach bars and bungalows.
Always seems to be busy!
-
Chalok Ban Khao
At the southern tip of the island, Chalok Ban
Khao is a beautiful stretch of golden sand and certainly
less crowded than Sairee. Longtails are dotted around
the bay and can ferry you around the waters.
-
Ao Leuk
On the eastern side, quiet Ao Leuk is a superb spot
to relax and find some peace and quiet. The beach
is beautiful and the water is ideal for snorkelling
but not too good for swimming.
-
Haad Thien ("Rocky Bay")
Tao's best beach, without question. Commonly
known as Rocky Bay, the water here is absolutely
clear and the beach is lined with coconut palms.
Surprisingly uncrowded, probably due to being a
fair way from the main town. Perfect!
-
Tanote Bay
Lined with huge boulders which give Tanote Bay it's
unique appearance. Just north of Ao Leuk, the conditions
here are very similar and taxi-boats can ferry you
between the two.
