Langkawi
Island
Langkawi is in fact just over the marine
border into Malaysia
but is only 15km from Satun. Langkawi is fast becoming
Malaysia's number 1 holiday destination but has
an altogether more tranquil atmosphere than, say,
Phuket or Koh Samui.
Langkawi is a cheap getaway spot due to being given
duty-free status by the Malay government to help
promote tourism. The busiest of all the beach areas
is Pentai Cenang, where most of the nightlife is
centred and
has everything to suit all travellers.
National
Marine Parks
Satun's two main Marine Parks, Koh
Turatao and the Petra
Islands, are amongst the most beautiful
spots in Thailand. So far untouched by the commercial
tourist industry, these groups of islands have little
competition when it comes to relaxing, peaceful
surroundings sitting within awesome natural beauty.
Koh Turatao Marine Park
- Koh Turatao
The largest of the islands, Turatao is a mountainous
landscape and has numerous canals, secluded bays
and unspoilt beaches.
- Koh Adang
Adang is itself a collection of tiny islands and
it's main feature is the crystal clear waters and
coral reef formations. The natural marine life found
around the islands is a fascinating mix of tropical
fish, lobster, porcupines and stingrays. Adang is
also the place to collect colourful shells.
- Koh Rawi
Tiny island which has totally untouched beaches.
- Koh Lipeh
Home to the sea gypsies of Satun. These fascinating
people live in stilt houses made of bamboo and have
many "God-offering" ceremonies which comprises
a special dance believed to keep away evil spirits.
- Koh Dong, Koh Lek, Koh Kland
These three tiny islands are virtually untouched
and have beautiful beaches.
Petra
Islands Marine Park
-
Koh Khoa
The shape of Ko Khoa resembles a castle and has
a natural stone gateway formation jutting out
into the sea.
- Hat Rawi
A great spot for camping lined with casuarina trees.
- Bulone Islands
The main feature of Bulone is the colourful marine
life in the crystal clear waters. You can see many
tropical species including tigerfish and different
types of starfish, all living amongst coral.
- Koh Bo Jet Look
Known as "Seven Well Island", the beaches
on "Koh Bo" have fine powdery sand and
many small fishing villages are dotted around.
Khao
To Ya Kong
This small hill is situated near the City Hall.
Despite its Chinese name, the spirit housed there
is Muslim and many people go to pay homage regularly.
The hill has a cliff with a cave and above the cave
is the shrine of the Muslim spirit.
Thale
Ban National Park
Thale Ban is a lagoon surrounded by mountains.
There are a lot of fish in the lagoon and the surrounding
area has natural beauty.
Nam
Tok Panan
This waterfall has 10 levels surrounded by
a pleasant forestry area suitable for sightseeing.
